Wal-Mart to Pay $11 Million Settlement for Using Illegal Immigrants to Clean Stores

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. agreed to pay $11 million to settle a federal investigation that found hundreds of illegal immigrants were contract cleaners of Wal-Mart stores.

U.S. immigration enforcement officials described the settlement's dollar figure as the largest of its kind. Wal-Mart admitted no wrongdoing in the case. Labor experts have stated that the $11 million settlement is insignificant to a company with $285 billion in sales, and is unlikely to deter other corporations from employing illegal workers.
